Community Integration and Quality of Life: A Comparison of Persons With Psychiatric Disabilities in Housing Programs and Community Residents Who Are Neighbours

Fifty-one persons with psychiatric disabilities in housing programs in the Ottawa-Carleton area were compared with a matched sample of 51 community residents on several aspects of community integration and subjective quality of life. Matching criteria included sex and location (i. c., living within one square block). Results showed persons with psychiatric disabilities reporting lower levels of social contact with neighbours and general life satisfaction than community residents. Both groups showed similar levels of physical presence and sense of community in the neighbourhood. Implications of the findings for planning and improving community mental health services are discussed.

L'insertion sociale ainsi que la qualité de vie de 51 personnes souffrant de troubles psychiatriques qui participaient è un programme de logement communutaire furent comparées è celles d'un échantillon de citoyens d'Ottawa Carleton. La stratification de l'échantillon fut effectuée selon le genere et le quartier (c'est-è-dire habitant è l'intérieur d'un même pâté de maisons). Les personnes souffrant de troubles psychiatriques rapportèrent établir oins de contacts avec les voisins et ètre moins satisfaits de la vie en général. Les deux groupes de citoyens étaient toutefois présents dans la comunauté et avaient un même sentiment de vie communautaire. La discussion porte sur des retombêes de celte étude pur la planification et l'amélioration des services de santé mentale.
