Using Social Network Therapy to Create Support Systems for the Chronically Mentally Disabled

Abstract

This paper describes a novel approach to the creation of a stable and responsive support system for the chronically mentally disabled living in the community. It begins with an explanation of the clinical relevance of social network and support analysis, and then concentrates on the goals and the methods of assessment and intervention that have been pursued by a team of occupational therapists who have been conducting social network therapy in Metropolitan Toronto. The article concludes with a discussion of the promise, obstacles, and limitations of this approach.

Résumé

Cet article décrit une nouvelle approache pour créer, à l'intention des malades mentaux chroniques vivant dans la communauté, un systéme de support stable et efficace pour répondre aux besoins. On explique d'abord la pertinence clinique d'analyser un réscau social de support; on expose ensuite les buts poursuivis et les méthodes d'analyse et d'intervention utilisées par une équipe d'ergothérapeutes qui a dirigé une thérapie de réscau dans le Toronto métropolitain. On conclut en discutant de l'avenir, des obstacles, et des limites de cette approache.
