Abstract

The place of medication in mental health practice is growing, particularly in regard to psychosis. However, its value in a clinical setting is largely paradoxical, and is as much symbolic as functional. The central position of medication in negotiating meanings and practices emerges from interviews with people from a variety of cultural backgrounds who had received a diagnosis of psychosis within the past 2 years, as well as with relatives and practitioners. The paradox of effectiveness, uncertainty and its functions, and the delineation of the clinical field are discussed. All these dynamics help give shape to the notion of autonomy.
