Challenges of Knowledge Translation in Rural Communities: The Case of Rural Children'S Mental Health

Abstract

Qualitative focus group methods were used to examine the readiness of children's mental health organizations in rural communities to make use of research knowledge. A social construction perspective underpins this study, highlighting the significance of subjective interpretation in the actions and reactions of individuals in their everyday world. Knowledge translation was conceptualized by participants on a continuum, ranging from the provision of basic service information to more sophisticated evidence-based research on evidence-based practice. For rural and remote communities, strategies at the service-provisional level can play a role in addressing the challenges posed by the dire lack of resources in children's mental health.

Résumé

L'objectif de cette recherche était d'examiner la capacité des organismes qui travaillent en santé mentale auprès des enfants des communautés rurales à utiliser le savoir scientifique. Nous avons, pour cela, eu recours à la méthode des groupes de discussion; notre étude repose sur la notion de construction sociale, ce qui nous permet de mettre en relief la portée de l'interprétation subjective que font les individus de leurs actions et réactions dans la vie de tous les jours. Nous avons observé que la façon dont les participants voient le transfert de savoirs constitue un continuum, et qu'il se fait autant à partir de la prestation de services d'information de base que de recherches plus complexes fondées sur l'expérience acquise grâce à des pratiques cliniques. Dans les communautés rurales ou éloignées des grands centres, les stratégies utilisées en matiére de prestation des services peuvent donc jouer un rôle important qui permet de relever le dèfi posé par le sérieux manque de ressources en santé mentale des enfants.
