Examining the Effects of Enhanced Funding for Specialized Community Mental Health Programs on Continuity of Care

In this paper we examine the changes in continuity of care (CoC) likely to be affected by new system investments and the contributing factors. A mixed method approach was used. Decision-makers participated in two rounds of qualitative interviews. A 3-year cross-sectional quantitative data collection approach was used with clients and case managers. A main finding was that new system investments can improve CoC in terms of increased care access. However, it is not clear how other CoC dimensions will be affected. New funding can also have negative consequences related to the service models in which investments are made.

Dans cet article, nous analysons les changements dans le suivi des soins (SdS) que peuvent entraîner les nouveaux investissements et les facteurs contributifs. Nous avons utilisé une approche combinant diverses méthodes. Les décideurs ont participé à deux cycles d'interviews de nature qualitative; et nous avons recueilli pendant trois ans des données en coupe transversale sur les bénéficiaires et les gestionnaires de cas. Notre principale observation est que les nouveaux investissements peuvent améliorer le SdS en permettant un meilleur accès aux soins. Toutefois, la façon dont les autres aspects du SdS peuvent être influencés n'est pas claire. Le nouveau financement peut aussi avoir des effets négatifs reliés au modèle de services suivant lequel les investissements sont réalisés.
