A Psycho-Educational Approach to Community Intervention with Ex-Mental Patients

Abstract

After-care programmes for ex-mental patients in the mental health system lack an integrated, community approach. Some programmes neglect the concrete problems in community living ex-mental patients experience, others neglect the intrapersonal difficulties encountered in returning to community life. The psycho-educational approach described in this paper is a practical theory unifying the development of essential interpersonal and intrapersonal competencies. The basic therapeutic method is the problem-posing dialogue in which learner and teacher develop the learner's potential to be a productive individual. After reviewing after-care services. I discuss the three guiding principles of psycho-education: maximum consumer involvement, the unity of internal and external change, and in vivo intervention. Then I identify the critical therapeutic skills demanded and indicate the appropriate type of programme evaluation.

Résumé

Les programmes post-soin pour les ex-patients psychiatriques manquent d'une approahe intégrée et communautaire. Certains programmes néglient les problèmes concrets qu'expérimentent les ex-patients dans la communauté, d'autres mettent en veilleuse les difficultés intrapersonnelles que ceux-ci rencontrent en retournant vivre dans la communauté, Cet article décrit une approache psycho-éducative qui consiste en une théorie pratique faisant l'unité entre les compétences interpersonnelles et intrapersonnelles. La méthode thérapeutique de base est le dialogue qui vise l'identification du problème et qui amène l'apprenant et l'enseignant à développer les compétences d'un apprenant pour devenir un individu productif. Après avoir passé en revue les services post-soin, l'auteur amorce une discussion sur les trois principes de base en psycho-éducation; l'implication maximale du consommateur, l'unité entre le changement interne et le changement externe, et l'intervention “in vivo”. On identifie les compétences thérapeutiques de base et le type approprié de programme d'évaluation.
