The Forgotten Purpose and Future Promise of University Education

Abstract

The paper reviews trends and fundamental purposes of university education in Canada over the 20th century. A major traditional function of university education has been neglected. An emerging direction in late 20th-century university practice is identified and a more suitable approach for the 21st century is suggested.

Cet article passe en revue les tendances et les orientations fondamentales de l'enseignment supérieur canadien au 20c siécle. On y constate qu'une fonction traditionnellement reconnue comme cruciale a été négligée. A la fin du siécle, on peut observer l'émergence d'une nouvelle direction dans la pratique universitaire et proposer une orientation plus adéquate pour le 21e siécle.
