La paternité des jeunes pères en contexte économique précaire : les facteurs personnels et environnementaux qui influencent le processus d'adaptation

Résumé
Une première transition à la paternité peut être une expérience enrichissante pour certains jeunes pères et une expérience difficile et stressante pour d'autres. Plusieurs facteurs personnels et environnementaux peuvent influencer le processus d'adaptation à la paternité. Cet article rapporte les résultats d'un mémoire de maîtrise qualitatif dont l'un des objectifs consistait à mieux saisir quels sont les facteurs susceptibles d'influencer ce processus. Les résultats recueillis suggèrent que prendre part à la décision de garder l'enfant et le soutien social auquel les jeunes pères ont accès représentent des facteurs cruciaux et déterminants dans leur processus d'adaptation à la paternité.
Abstract
A first transition to fatherhood may be a valuable experience for some young fathers but a stressful and hard time for others. Several personal and environmental factors may influence the young fathers’ coping process during that period. This article reports the results of a qualitative master's thesis in which one of the objectives was to better understand the influences on this coping process. The results suggest that being part of the decision to keep the baby and the social support to which young fathers have access represent crucial and determining factors in their adaptation to fatherhood.
