Issues in Rural Community Psychology: Implications for Practice and the Development of a Model

Abstract

A rationale for the development of rural community psychology in Canada is presented. It focuses on salient issues and basic characteristics of Canadian rural communities. Principles for an applied model emphasize the importance of cultural and linguistic identities, knowledge of rural value systems, an informed approach to change, and utilization of current strengths and resources. Implications for practice include characteristics of rural community psychologists, the need for peer supports, roles and decision-making, coping with bureaucracy, intergroup relations, and ethical problems.

Résumé

Cet article développe une raison d'être pour la psychologie communautaire rurale au Canada. Les caractéristiques fondamentales des communautés rurales canadiennes et les questions saillantes touchant ces communautés sont identifiées. Les principes d'un modèle appliqué soulignent l'importance des identités culturelles et linguistiques, de la connaissance de systèmes de valeurs ruraux, d'une approache avisée au changement et de l'utilisation de forces et de ressources actuelles. Les implications pour la pratique comprennent les caractéristiques de psychologues communnautaires rurax, le besion du support des pairs, les rôles et le processus de décision, la capacité à transiger avec la bureaucratic, les relations entre groupes et les questions déontologiques.
