A Case Study of Nova Scotia Health’s Central Intake Services for Mental Health and Addictions: Design, Implementation, and Impact

Abstract

This article outlines the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Nova Scotia Health’s first province-wide centralized intake services for both mental health and addictions. The key steps in the planning phase included stakeholder identification, current state assessment and system design. The service was then successfully implemented, leveraging dedicated training and support resources for managers and staff. The results of the evaluation suggest that the intake service reduced wait times for mental health and addiction intake assessments by 60%. Moreover, clinicians found the assessments useful in understanding their clients, while clients reported that the intake experience was supportive, although the response rate was low.

Ce document décrit la planification, la mise en œuvre et l’évaluation des premiers services de réception centralisés à l’échelle provinciale de la Nouvelle-Écosse pour la santé mentale et les dépendances. Les étapes clés de la phase de planification comprenaient l’identification des parties prenantes, l’évaluation de l’état actuel et la conception du système. Le service a ensuite été mis en œuvre avec succès, en tirant parti des ressources de formation et de soutien dédiées pour les gestionnaires et le personnel. Les résultats de l’évaluation suggèrent que le service de réception a réduit les temps d’attente pour les évaluations de réception en santé mentale et en toxicomanie de 60 %. De plus, les cliniciens ont trouvé les évaluations utiles pour comprendre leurs clients, tandis que les clients ont rapporté que l’expérience de réception était favorable, bien que le taux de réponse ait été faible.
