Publication: Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health
September 1995

Abstract

This article provides an overall description of the program called -Vie de famille, de la discipline à l'amour- and presents the foremost results of an evaluation assessing its outcome. The program is characterized by structured group intervention offered in six workshops. Its main goal is to support parents of children in elementary school in their role as educators within the context of their respective family situations. The evaluation of the effects of the program included both a pretest and posttest given to an experimental group of 115 participants divided into nine sub-groups and a control group of 67 parents. Globally, the results obtained indicate that the program can be efficient, at least in some instances and on a short-term basis. Indeed, when compared to the control group, workshop participants said they experienced less difficulty in accomplishing their role as educators, confirming that the program seems to have accomplished its main purpose. The participants also consider themselves to be more efficient parents. Interviews conducted following the intervention support these results.
