Abstract

This article has two aims. First, it attempts to enrich the concept of empowerment by discussing it in the context of theories of social movement elaborated by the French sociologist Alain Touraine. This perspective emphasizes the role of the individual as actor and subject and proposes a set of concepts which can help to better understand notions of power and consciousness. It is also in accordance with emergent constructivist paradigms in community psychology. Secondly, this paper examines the role of empowerment in psychosocial intervention. Two hundred promotion-prevention projects implemented in the Montreal area are evaluated for their potential to develop empowerment processes in youth, families, and communities. This review enables the authors to consider the prospects for the future of an empowerment perspective.
