Définitions et conséquences des troubles de santé mentale : Une analyse qualitative des représentations des migrants et migrantes de l’Afrique subsaharienne à Winnipeg

Résumé
L’objectif de l’étude était d’explorer la façon dont les migrants et migrantes de l’Afrique subsaharienne définissent les troubles mentaux ainsi que les conséquences qu’ils y associent. Un total de 50 personnes ont participé à une entrevue individuelle. Alors que certaines personnes définissent les troubles mentaux à travers le concept de folie dont les principaux symptômes sont de nature comportementale et cognitive, d’autres adhèrent à une conception plus large qui englobe des troubles de nature affective et relationnelle. En retour, les troubles mentaux peuvent menacer les projets de vie, la santé et la sécurité physique de la personne atteinte et peuvent avoir des retombés sur ses relations interpersonnelles et sur la société en général. Les implications pour la pratique des professionnels sont discutées.
Abstract
This study aimed at exploring the way sub-Saharan African immigrants and refugees define mental illness as well as the consequences they associate with these illnesses. A total of 50 participants took part in an individual interview. Whereas some participants define mental illness in terms of madness and insanity which were associated with behavioural and cognitive dysfunctions, others adhere to a broader conception that encompasses affective and relational disorders. In turn, mental illness can jeopardize the affected individual’s life projects, health, and physical safety and can have repercussions on his or her relationships as well as on the rest of society. Implications for health professionals are discussed.
